Given the high level of integration of modern electronics, the mechanical challenge of fitting so many features into such a small packages will be the biggest problem.

CPU - StrongARM SA1100

This integrates an SA-1 high performance RISC core with MMUs, cache memories, LCD controller, several serial ports, a memory controller, a real time clock and more into a single chip.

Analog I/O - UCB1100

This has ADCs and DACs for the telephone port, the microphone and speaker, the touch pad, battery level monitors and so on.

Memory - 16 MBytes of Low Power EDO DRAMs

Two 64 Mbits chips are soldered directly on the main board, so expansion is not possible (except through the PC Card port, but that is hardly a high performance option).

Memory - 2 MBytes of Flash Memory

The system software is stored here. It can be upgraded in the field, if needed.

Scanner - CCD system

This part is still being designed. CCD chips from Sharp are being considered.

Power Supply - Batteries

While AAA bateries are ideal from a size and weight point of view, they are underpowered for this application. If possible, AA batteries will be tried instead.
