What's new on September 1, 1995
Previous changes on August 9, 1994.
The previous
update had been on June 19, 1994.
Wow! It has been a long time since the last update, but
we have a lot of changes in this third release:
- The home page was edited to
make this "what's new" reference easier to find. More
images have been added to make navigation easier. As the
link to/from LSI-USP is not very fast, this might be a
problem for some people. Using a newer browser ( like
Netscape ) can help, or you might want to turn off the
loading of images. Actually, these images are still quite
modest compared to many pages on the web.
- An introduction to the project
is now available. Many pages that were previously under
"technical specifications" have been moved here.
- Merlin's runtime environment
is now described in some detail.
- The pages have now been logically grouped in a tree
structure, and the generation of the navigational aids
at the bottom of each page has been automated. This was
done with a Makefile which calls
file conv.m4 ( you must "view source"
to see this file, otherwise it is just a big mess )
when it needs to update
a .html file.
- a tutorial for the Self language is being created
- a Tiny Self implementation is
described
- an icon indicating stuff has been
added to make it easier to tell what has been added in the last
revision. This page is still useful for finding out what has only
been changed, however.
- the papers page now has a few unpublished
papers that people might want to read
- a html English translation of the Why Objects?
paper is now available.
- Jecel's home page now points to the
bookmarks file used by Netscape through
a symbolic link, so it always reflects the most recent changes to
the list of favorite pages.
- the old explanation about why the Merlin project includes hardware
has been moved to a new Frequently Asked Questions
page.
- some pages that are not quite there yet are now marked as
coming rather than new . That
means that the future plans page now refers only to the project as
the plans for these pages can be seen by looking at the pages
themselves.
- the Museum was reorganized as a timeline
using the new table
