Problems With Pilot Projects

A "Pilot Study" is the most obvious method to evaluate a given proposal involving the use of computers in the classroom. A small group is given machines to use for some task during a predetermined period after which their results are compared to those of a "control group" that didn't have access to computers during that time. Besides the natural difficulties of evaluating the results in a meaningful manner, we will see some inherent problems with this method.

This doesn't mean that pilot studies shouldn't be used (quite the contrary!) but that care must be taken in the design and conclusions of such studies.
