The Bag of Tricks

Alan Kay says "point of view is worth 80 IQ points" - you might even be smarter, but if others have better tools to work with they might get better results. The time to learn the "tricks of the trade" is the best investment of the programmer.

Powerful Ideas

Some concepts, like the arch of bricks in construction work, are pretty obvious once you have learned them. Though they are normally easy to learn, it is a very rare individual indeed that can come up with one of them on his own. And not knowing them can make simple things nearly impossible to accomplish. That is why the fundamentals must be complemented with a knowledge of recursion, sorting and searching, data structures, etc.
